Provisional Registration

Australian and New Zealand Medical School Graduates

Provisional registration applies to Australian and New Zealand medical school graduates applying to undertake an approved intern position.

Approved medical courses are listed under Approved Programs of Study.

Provisional registrants are only permitted to work in approved intern positions. They are not permitted to undertake any clinical work outside their allocated intern position.

Intern positions are approved by the Medical Board of Australia after they have been assessed by a postgraduate medical council (PMC). A PMC makes a recommendation to the Board about whether to approve a position for intern training.

Intern positions should provide a supportive environment for new graduates. The positions are well supervised, offer training opportunities to the intern and supervisors provide regular formal and informal feedback to the intern about their performance.

After completing a 12 month approved intern position, including completing the necessary rotations (as defined by each state and territory board), registrants are eligible to apply for general registration.

AMC Certificate Holders (IMGs in the standard pathway)

IMGs who obtain their AMC certificate are eligible to apply for provisional registration to enable them to undertake a 12-month period of supervised practice, necessary for them to be eligible for general registration.

Ideally, IMGs with provisional registration would benefit from 12-months supervised training in an approved intern position. However, the Board recognises that approved intern positions are limited. As an alternative, the Board requires that provisional registrants (IMGs) undertake a 12-month period of supervised training that is made up of:

  • Medicine for at least 10 weeks
  • Surgery for at least 10 weeks
  • Emergency medicine for at least 8 weeks
  • A range of other positions to make up 12 months (minimum of 47 weeks full time service).

For details of all the requirements please read the Board’s registration standard for Granting general registration to medical practitioners in the standard pathway who hold an AMC certificate.
