The Australian Medical Council (the AMC) is responsible for accrediting education providers and their programs of study for the medical profession.
The AMC assesses specialist medical colleges against the approved accreditation standards.
Accreditation standards take effect on the day that they are published on the Medical Board of Australia’s website or on a later day stated in the standard.
The Standards for Assessment and Accreditation of Specialist Medical Programs by the Australian Medical Council 2023 replace the standards that came into effect from 1 January 2016. The standards have been updated to remove the standards related to professional development programs. There are separate standards for the accreditation of continuing professional development programs and CPD homes.
The AMC provides accreditation reports to the Board on the programs of study it has accredited. The Board then may approve, or refuse to approve, the accredited program of study as providing a qualification for the purposes of specialist registration. An approval may be granted subject to conditions.
