Continuing Professional Development

Continuing professional development (CPD) has been redesigned to support quality, lifelong learning for doctors that is relevant, effective and evidence-based.

Approved CPD requirements for doctors are detailed in this revised CPD registration standard.

CPD at a glance

There are three core elements:

  1. CPD homes for all – for quality assurance
  2. Professional development plans for all – for CPD with purpose
  3. Different types of CPD – for CPD with value

Timelines:

  • 1 January 2023 – AMC-accredited specialist medical colleges and a new accredited organisation = CPD homes
    • Doctors doing CPD in colleges will be able to meet updated CPD requirements
    • Doctors doing CPD in other accredited CPD homes will be able to meet CPD requirements
    • Other doctors keep doing the same sort of CPD as they are currently doing
  • 1 January 2024 – all doctors in CPD homes.
