Tribunal affirms National Board decision to refuse registration

20 Apr 2015

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has affirmed a Medical Board of Australia decision to refuse Dr Salahuddin Taj’s application for specialist registration.

Dr Taj lodged an appeal against the Board’s decision on the grounds that he had satisfied the Board’s eligibility requirements for specialist registration.

The tribunal found Dr Taj had not completed any of the four pathways available under the National Law to achieve specialist registration, and that he:

  • did not hold an approved qualification for the speciality of physician, general medicine
  • was not approved as an overseas-trained physician, and
  • had not completed the advanced training course approved by the Royal Australian College of Physicians, but had instead been granted limited registration so he could undertake this training.

The tribunal concluded that Dr Taj did not hold a substantially equivalent qualification for the specialty, and that while he had worked in Australia for several years before his application, this practice did not meet the requirements for specialist registration.

The reasons for the tribunal decision are on the AustLII website.
