Board Chair’s leadership recognised in prestigious AMA award

01 Jun 2015

The leadership and contribution of Medical Board of Australia Chair, Dr Joanna Flynn AM, has been recognised with the prestigious 2015 AMA Woman in Medicine award.

The award celebrates Dr Flynn’s leadership of the Medical Board of Australia and her contribution to general practice, medical regulation, and improving the quality of care for patients.

In 2011, Dr Flynn was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to medical administration and to the community, particularly in the areas of practice standards, regulation, professional education and as a general practitioner.

Chair of AHPRA, Michael Gorton AM, congratulated Dr Flynn on behalf of the Agency Management Committee and staff of AHPRA.

‘Dr Flynn’s distinguished record of service to the community and the medical profession speaks for itself. I’d also like to recognise her wisdom and integrity, and thank her for her commitment to bringing out the best of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme,’ Mr Gorton said.

AHPRA CEO, Martin Fletcher, said the success of AHPRA’s partnership with the Medical Board of Australia was a credit to Dr Flynn’s energy, vision and leadership.

‘It is a privilege to work closely with someone so insightful, astute and generous on something as important as improving patient safety through the effective regulation of Australia’s 100,000 registered medical practitioners,’ Mr Fletcher said.

Members of the Medical Board of Australia congratulated Dr Flynn on the prestigious award.

‘Leading the profession and the community through the transition from state-based to national medical regulation required judgement, vigilance and courage,’ Board spokesman Dr Stephen Bradshaw said.

‘This award shines a light on her contribution and we are delighted that others recognise the skill, knowledge and expertise that those who work with her see in action every day,' Dr Bradshaw said.
