Doctors in training are among the first people to care for us in hospital. The latest episode of the Taking care podcast takes us into their world for a look at our medical training system and culture.
As this year’s Medical Training Survey kicks off, the discussion is a timely look at junior doctors and the training system.

Host Tash Miles speaks with Dr Hash Abdeen, Chair of the AMA Council of Doctors in Training, prevocational trainee, Dr Ekta Paw, and Medical Board member Associate Professor Stephen Adelstein.

‘There’s a lot of good that’s happening in medical training, I think Australia has a world class training program…the less good things are the things we’ve talked about for a long time like bullying and harassment and issues around wellbeing,’ Dr Abdeen said.

Results from the 2020 Medical Training Survey will deepen the data from the 2019 survey, which are already an important, accessible online resource.

The MTS is an especially important source of information from trainees who have finished medical school but not yet joined a specialist training program.

‘Knowing that there are lots of junior doctors who are in the pre-vocational space for various reasons… this is really the only place to get information about that group of doctors,’ Dr Paw said.

This year’s survey will also examine the impact of COVID-19 on medical training and take a deeper look at the culture of medicine.

‘The future of medical training is one of continuous innovation and development and to ensure that we have quality health care, we need quality training,’ Associate Professor Stephen Adelstein said.
